What’s the Difference Between Direct Drive and Belt Drive Pressure Washers?

We get this question a lot. If you’re on the market for a new pressure washer then it is certainly a good question to ask. My first response is always, “What will you be using the equipment for? And how often?” Are you going to use the machine daily, weekly or monthly? Will it be used for multiple hours at a time? These are key factors to determining the best purchase for your needs. Here are some need-to-know differences of Direct Drive and Belt Drive units:

Direct Drive machines are more compact, and will cost less up front, but if you plan to use the regularly then it might not be the best option for you. The pump on a Direct Drive pressure washer has a hollow shaft that slides directly onto the drive shaft of the motor or engine. Therefore, the pump will be turning at the same RPM’s as the motor (typically 3450 RPM for a gas engine, or 1725-3450 for electric motors) which reduces the life of the pump, especially from heavy use. The vibration from the motor is also transferring directly to the pump which causes more “wear and tear” over time. These units are ideal for occasional use, so if you plan to use your washer daily, or even weekly, then saving a few hundred dollars up front will not pay off in the end.

Belt Drive pressure washers are setup so that the pump and motor or engine is mounted to a pulley system that is driven by one or more belts. This allows the pump to turn at a much lower RPM which keeps the pump cooler and extends its lifespan. This system helps isolate the pump from the heat of the engine or motor, and the belts and pulleys help absorb the vibration from the motor which reduces pump fatigue. Belt drive pumps also have a larger oil capacity which helps to keep the pump cooler. These units are designed for heavy, everyday use. The initial cost is higher, but you will save time and money down the road if you intend to use your washer regularly.

Picking Your Degreaser

With so many varieties and combinations of cleaners these days it’s hard to know what to buy. To boot, each different surface, application and situation increases the number of possibilities by a huge amount. When it comes to degreasers it is important to know what kind of equipment you are working with and what kind of grime you are working against. Here are some basic tips for when it comes to picking a degreaser.

  • Consider the surface first: What is it made of? Are you dealing with multiple materials? Choose a chemical that is not going to corrode, damage or stain the surfaces you’re dealing with, and most importantly, know what type of grease you’re dealing with. Some degreasers are better for organic soils and some are better for inorganic soils.
  • What tools and equipment will you be using to clean with? Always make sure your equipment is compatible with the chemicals you are purchasing. For example, pressure washers are typically setup to run either acidic chemicals or alkaline, but can also be rigged to use both alternatively. To avoid damage and inconvenience, make sure you know the equipment you are buying for.
  • Prepare for clean-up. Many cleaners out there have specific disposal instructions and some even require a certain type of machine for disposal.
  • Protect yourself and your surroundings. Always read instructions, double check dilution ratios and wear proper personal protective equipment. Remove or cover anything that could be damaged by the product, and ensure you have proper ventilation at all times.

Cleaning Brick & Concrete

Removing grease or rust stains is rarely an easy task, and porous materials like brick and concrete can be especially tricky. Anyone who has spilled motor oil in their driveway would probably agree. It’s undoubtedly smarter to act sooner than later when fighting these stains; the longer they sit the harder they are to remove. When evaluating what chemicals are needed, here are some factors to keep in mind:

  • When treating grease stains, you want to stay away from acid based cleaners. They are not only ineffective, but can intensify the stain or cause it to spread. We recommend picking up some of our high-strength CC-124 degreaser to make the job a little easier. This chemical is highly alkaline which makes it the most effective choice for removing any grease stain. For best results, apply CC-124 to the stained area and let the it soak for up to 30 minutes before rinsing with a pressure washer. This process may have to be repeated a few times.
  • If you are dealing with a motor oil stain, follow the same steps listed above. If the stain is still appearing after a few rounds of CC-124, then try some Oil-Dri for the last step. This powdery substance can be mashed into the cement stain with your feet or hands (with gloves). Leave the product on the surface allowing it to wear away on its own; it will help remove the lingering coloration. This process may also have to be repeated.
  • Rust stains are another unwanted eye-sore & also very tough to remove. The best chemical for rust is Oxalic Acid. It can be bought at our shop in powder form, or you can try our liquid solution of Rust Kutter for smaller areas. Both are very effective, but like grease stains, sometimes will require multiple applications.

Choosing your equipment:

  • Use a pressure washer, ideally a hot water machine, with a rating of 3000psi or higher with a flow rate of 4+ gallons per minute. Surface cleaners can also be effective for soaking out those tough stains.
  • Ensuring you have the right nozzle is also important for effective cleaning. Here is a great reference sheet from General Pump to help calculate which size nozzle to use with your machine.
  • Also consider the spray angle of the nozzle. Typical nozzles come in zero, fifteen, twenty-five, forty and sometimes sixty-degree spray angles. For tough cleans like concrete stains we recommend a zero or 15-degree nozzle. Turbo nozzles are also great idea for these types of cleaning projects.
  • Be sure to always use caution when operating a pressure washer, especially with a smaller degree nozzle. Always point the spray gun away from others, preferably at the ground when starting your machine.

Tips for Pressure Washing Wood & Composite Decks

Some of us may not realize it at first glance, but there is a science to Pressure Washing effectively. Every surface has its own unique properties and its own unique dirt. You might be surprised by how tricky some surfaces can be to clean; especially delicate materials like wood and composites. Here are some tricks-of-the-trade to help you with those tough stains.

  • Firstly, you want to make sure your pressure is right. Typically you don’t need a machine rated higher than 1500-2000psi, and 40 or 60 degree nozzle is recommended.
  • It is a good idea to sweep & lightly scrub the surface before pressure washing to remove the outer layer of dirt. Use a synthetic brush with medium to stiff bristles. After you’re done, rinse it down with water. Make sure you don’t skip the gaps between the boards. They are breeding grounds for mold due to moisture and debris accumulation.
  • Next, you want to soak the deck with soap and let it sit for about 10 minutes without drying. Avoid using any chemicals with chlorine bleach in them as it can easily eat away at the materials and can worsen mold and mildew issues down the road.
  • After soaking, use the pressure washer to spray in smooth, even strokes without getting closer than 1ft from the surface. This helps avoid lap marks and chipping.
  • Start on the inside and move outwards making horizontal movements with the spray wand. Corners can be tricky, so we recommend doing those first. And, remember, don’t skip the gaps! You may have to repeat this step 2-3 times.
  • When you have finished and the surface has dried, apply a moisture barrier sealant to help protect the materials and prevent mold/mildew, deck rot and warping. Be cautious of any “waterproofing” sealants as they can trap moisture underneath.

Repeat these steps 1-2 times per year to keep your deck in tip-top shape.

How to get your Pressure Washing business off the ground

It is common nowadays to hear about these “Get Rich Quick” schemes, or “How to Make Millions Overnight,” but most of us have figured out that getting rich quick rarely happens unless you luck out with a winning lottery ticket or some kind of huge inheritance. Realistically, getting rich is hard work, and usually takes years, often decades. You can’t be a stranger to getting your hands dirty, or good ol’ customer service. If you stay true to your vision, maintain your integrity and consistency, then most of the time you can make a pretty good life for yourself. We want to see all of our customers succeed, and will be here to support our local businesses big and small alike. If you are thinking about starting your own Pressure Washing business, here are some tips to get your gig off the ground.

Study Your Market – Make sure you live in, or can commute to an area where there is a demand for Pressure Washers. This is important before starting any business because you could end up wasting a lot of time and money investing in something that not many people need or want. A lot of times this comes down to the average person’s disposable income in your area. If people don’t have extra money to buy your services then that is a good indicator that you might not get much business. Makes sense right? It also helps to make sure your brand is unique, original. Try to think of ways you can stand out among the other local businesses.

Save, Save, Save – Another important prerequisite to starting any business is saving money. You need money to get a business license, and to invest in your start-up costs. You will probably also incur unexpected costs along the way before any real income starts flowing. And remember that you technically don’t start profiting until you’ve paid off your initial costs.

Invest – Do it right the first time. You don’t want to be a year into operations and have an, “oh crap” moment when you realize you’ve wasted months training the wrong people, or by taking the cheap route on equipment, supplies, location, etc. I will readily admit that I am a huge bargain shopper, and it’s a wonderful trait to have, but we must also recognize when money needs to be spent for the better of the business. Making decisions about money is never easy, but cutting corners to save a penny will have you losing dollars in the end.

Marketing– Always start with word-of-mouth, even before you’ve started your business. Spread the word as much as you can, encourage referrals, and use free tools like Facebook and LinkedIn to get your name out there. Just make sure to be consistently professional in your posts. Spend a little money when you can on advertising, but be sure to focus on 1-2 media outlets that will work the best for your business and your desired audience. Always make it a priority to deliver what you promise. Don’t overdo it on specials and promos, especially at first, because you don’t want to undersell yourself. Just because someone else’s products might be cheaper does not mean cutting rates is a good sales method. It can give the impression that you don’t feel confident enough in your product or service.

Work Hard – This is perhaps the most important bit of advice I can give you: Do what needs to be done to make everyone a repeat customer. This is how you build your base and reputation. From the first customer to the last, you want to make a good impression. Imagine buying services from a new local Pressure Washer only to find out they are unpleasant to work with, or did a sloppy job on your house. Would you rehire them? Probably not. It is no myth that first impressions are lasting, and therefore key to your business’ survival and prosperity. It does not matter if you have a high-school education or a Masters degree, if you aren’t a hard worker then you will never succeed. Anyone can do it! You have to be ready to grin-and-bear it sometimes, but in the end you will feel proud, fulfilled, and your pockets should stay nice and full.

Overall starting a business is hard, but we believe anyone can do it.
