We all know that safety is extremely important to our well-being, and should practice caution in all areas of our lives. However, some may not realize that even small at-home projects could create unexpected hazards. At Energen we are avid pressure-washer lovers, but with that love comes a lot of respect. Whether you are a DIY’er or running a professional business, we all must be aware that we are handling a powerful machine that can be unforgiving if used improperly.
According to ABC News, in 2014 around 6,000 people visited the emergency room after using a pressure washer. I don’t know about you, but I was quite surprised by that number. So we must to be mindful of our actions, especially around other people. Getting sprayed by water coming out at 4000psi or higher does not feel good!
Here are some helpful tips for keeping it safe:
- Make sure to always point the pressure washer wand away from yourself or anyone else before turning on your machine. Ideally the stream should be directed to the ground. Also, you will want to have a firm grip on the wand when the water starts to spray out. Safety glasses are always a good idea.
- Make sure you are away from any windows, light weight patio furniture, flower pots, etc. These items could be destroyed or blown away by the stream and into another person. It could also cause damage to someone’s house or property.
- Always remember- slippery when wet! Wear appropriate shoes and be extra cautious when working at elevated levels. FYI, flip-flops will probably have you flopping on your head.
- If you are using pressure washer chemicals or bleach in your water then you want to avoid getting these on your skin, clothes, or in your eyes. Also make sure you have removed any items that could be damaged by the chemicals.
