The Benefits of Washing Your Roof

There’s a fungus among us. A type of algae called Gloeocapsa Magma is wreaking havoc on asphalt roofs across the country. It appears in the form of black spots and streaks on your roof and can quickly become a serious problem if left untreated.

Gloeocapsa Magma algae feeds on the limestone found in your shingles. Over time as the algal colony grows, the older algae begin to decompose and retain moisture allowing the colony to grow even faster. Furthermore, increased moisture levels lead to the growth of lichen, mold and even moss.

These algae are spread by wind and wild animals such as birds and squirrels. Therefore, if your neighbor’s house is affected then yours could be next. It is important to treat your roof annually to prevent several potential issues. Gloeocapsa Magma can affect the integrity of your house, pose health risks, and increase utility bills. When you start to notice those dreadful black streaks, it’s time for a wash.
